Mineral County in Retrospect

Mineral County in Retrospect

By Margie E. Hahn

This incredibly interesting new book documents the boom and bust nature of a rich part of western-most Montana's early history, from rambunctious gold mining camps to construction of the famed Mullan Road that provided the first major east-west road link across western Montana, the calamitous Great Burn of 1910, and the subsequent development of the region's forest industry as well as the building of two major railroads and an interstate highway through the mountainous area. It is the second title in Stoneydale Press' “Montana Legacy Series,” an ongoing series of books intended to explore and record aspects of Montana history that have been largely overlooked or barely covered in past works. Stories and anecdotes cover major events in the area's history and in the county's major towns (there are no “cities” in Mineral County) of Alberton, Superior, St. Regis, DeBorgia, Haugan, Saltese and a wonderful story about the naming of the townsite of Taft. Issued in 5 ½ by 8 ½-inch softcover format, 160 pages, a foreword and 12 chapters, plus 60 historic photographs. Margie Hahn is also the author of the book “Mules & Mountains.”
